I love when a new year rolls around and with it brings a whole host of predictions in what will drive the world of home interiors. Last year saw the unprecedented rise of millennial pink, a shift towards bringing the outside in and a real emphasis on mixing textures. So what will 2018 have in store for us? Here are my thoughts on 2018 interior design trends.

What are the interior experts predicting?

Good Homes Magazine believe that this year will see a focus on industrial finishes; polished concrete, exposed brick and reclaimed wood. 2017 saw the emergence of a shift from neutral colour schemes to the use of dark moody colours, this trend is predicted to be sticking around for 2018. If you are looking for dark paint colours then a couple of my favourites are Farrow and Ball Blue Black and Little Greene Basalt. This year experts predict we will see a lot less grey as people feel more confident to experiment with bold colours.

Ryan Korban made a really interesting prediction for Vogue stating that this year people want their spaces to feel curated as opposed to decorated. Long gone is the need for a space to feel matchy and thematic. Instead people want their homes to feel eclectic, filled with carefully selected styled items. I can really see this being a big thing for 2018, with the prevalence of Pinterest and Instagram we are constantly inspired by beautifully styled, ecclectic aesthetics and long for our homes to feel as well thought out and pleasing to the eye. 

Copper finishes definitely had their moment in the spotlight but this year Harper’s Bazaar predict that mixing metals with become a popular choice. We are very on board with this trend, mixing metals are always a great way to create features in a space.

Big artwork is also expected to be on the rise for 2018. Artwork is such a great way to add character and personality to your space. My clients in the Mid-Century Modern Cotswolds home had an amazing art collection and I loved working with their pieces within the schemes. For more pictures of this project be sure to have a look at our portfolio. I also think big prints can be a really affordable way to change your space. Lumitrix are a new favourite of mine, they have so many stunning photographic prints.

Velvet furniture and furnishings are also going to continue to be popular, I think this links to 2017’s focus on mixing and adding lots of textures into spaces. I love these gorgeous velvet linen mix cushions from William Yeoward. 

I was lucky enough to go to Maison & Objet in Paris last weekend where I got an even better insight into what this years collections are looking like. I thought I’d share with you my favourite finds from the show! 

Maison & Objet

So firstly if you haven’t heard of Maison Objet is a French trade fair for interior design and is regarded as one of the most important European events for interior design. It showcases creativity and innovation and emerging talents in the industry. Naturally this makes it one of the best places to visit to get a real insight into 2018 interior design trends and what homes are going to look like this year. After such an inspiring trip I felt I had to share all of my finds with you in this post!

Woven materials

Woven materials and textures is set to be a big trend for 2018 with a focus on wicker and rattan as schemes move more towards schemes encompassing natural and unfinished finishes. I absolutely love the furniture by Palecek Design. Their beautiful online catalogue and Instagram showcases their range of furniture, I particularly love their rattan bar stools. Their ranges are so in keeping with predicted trends for the colour palette of 2018 with the furniture being predominantly neutral in colour with the use of woods and leather. 

This trend was definitely evident at Maison and Objet and here are some of my favourite finds…

This hanging egg chair is such a design classes, I actually found this one at Maison and Objet and it is now going into an open plan kitchen project. I’ll definitely share pictures of this over on our Instagram once it’s installed! 

Lighting

I always firmly believe that the right lighting can completely make or break a design. A mix of different lighting types is essential to create the right ambience in a room so make sure you have soft lamps and brighter task lighting. I love seeing the new trends for statement lighting and always feel so inspired and excited to use these ideas in future designs. Big and bold lighting can be a key feature in schemes and make your room step up a level from ordinary to amazing. Here are some of my favourite lighting finds from the show…

These images are amazing examples of how large scale lighting can be used to create beautiful eye catching features completely elevating the whole design.

Lumitrix – Lumitrrix are an amazing company that was founded as a platform for talented photographers to showcase their work. Their gallery portrays a beautifully curated selection of images that allow people to buy art they love for their homes. Also it’s worth noting that their website, blog and Instagram are perfect if you’re looking for some much needed inspiration for which art is right for you. It was so lovely to meet the Lumitrix team at Maison & Objet and I very much look forward to working with them this year. 

Everything else we loved…

These beautiful throws are from Australia. They are made from an incredibly high quality material whilst also being ethically sourced. 

How amazing is this wall mural, such a great alternative to wallpaper for a backdrop/feature wall. 

Often these semi circular sofas can be very formal, however this I found is a lovely casual example and is a perfect option for sociable seating.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post with our favourite finds from Maison and Objet. I had such an amazing time looking round the show (which is massive!!).
